Bella is a red nose Pitbull puppy from "American Grit". She is another great example of a traditional red nose Pitbull puppy for sale that was available here at HumboldtPitBulls. Her owner was preparing for her before the breeding even took place. He could not be happier with her out in TX.

There is a thing called an inbreeding coefficient.

Many old school red nose APBTs' have an inbreeding coefficients' of over 70%. My stud dog Carver (bred by Dave Miles who has been breeding the APBT for 35 years) is about 35%. I tend to stay around 25%, or so. Its the ancestors, not necessarily the mom and the dad, that determine the inbreeding coefficient.

For example, if the parents to a litter both come from an outcross (THEIR parents were not related with in the first 5 generations) the pups will have a relatively low inbreeding coefficient even if they are brother and sister, or mom and dad.

I had some one call and talk with me about dogs. He had blue nose American Bullies (they were an APBT cross), told me he had bred father to daughter three times in a row! I asked him why? He said he just wanted to and that they were healthy, just smaller. Crazy. So, as Bert Sorrells (a breeder in my dogs pedigree) would say, "breed em' tight, breed em' right". I do inbreeding coefficient make ups before all of my breedings. By keeping line line tight and not doing to many outcrosses, you do not add to many new hidden recessive bad genes that may creep up and the gene pool stays strong.

I have people ask me about "fixing" their dog. Some things in life have no clear answer. However, here are a few experiences to help you reach your own "answer" to the question of if "fixing" a dog is the right thing to do for you:

-I have seen dogs fixed before a year of age and never fully develope.

-Tonka was kind of "fat" while he was young. He is lean Tonka now. It took over 3 years to lose his baby fat!! I just do not think he ever would have developed to be so lean if he was fixed before 3 years of age. However, his huge size is rare.

Most dogs are fixed. Every dog in my house (and we had a lot) growing up was fixed. The Dobermans that we owned both developed cancer, however who knows if it had anything to do with being altered. Altering a dog is a personal decision. It does not make the dog a different breed (ie. make a male APBT less dominate).
